PhD in Economics

The Doctoral Programme in Economics is hosted by the University of Porto School of Economics (FEP) and cef.up, the Center for Economics and Finance at the University of Porto. The mission of the PhD program in Economics is to train students to do solid and innovative research in Economics and become the future research and scholar leaders in this field. The program is deeply rooted on the values of excellence, innovation, and integrity. These are the values that guide the program since it was first established in 1998, and were key to acquiring the reputation that it deservingly earned at the forefront of advanced training in Economics in Portugal.

 

Objectives

This course aims to provide advanced capabilities in Economic Theory and Quantitative Methods, leading to a deeper understanding of various specialised areas of Economics and developing skills for economic analysis and scientific research. The course structure is designed to ensure that students acquire thorough knowledge to develop economic research and to contribute to the advance of their specialization area. The course encourages the submission of research results to publication in accredited scientific journals.

 

Target Population

The program is targeted at students highly motivated to start a research career in Economics, who either hold a master’s degree in Economics or excelled in undergraduate studies with a major in Economics.
Students who got their master’s or bachelor degrees from top Economics Departments in Portugal or in reputed schools around the world are especially targeted.
Students majoring in other fields such as Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering are also welcome to the Program.
