BRIEF BIO

José Varejão is Associate Professor of Economics at Universidade do Porto (Faculdade de Economia), researcher at cef.up, and associate researcher at IZA – Institute for Labor Economics. He holds a doctoral degree in Economics (University of Porto, 2001).

His research interest lies primarily in the field of labour and organizational economics, with labour demand and nonprofit organizations as main topics. He has published his research in high-rank academic journals, including the Journal of Labor Economics, Labour Economics, or the Journal of Population Economics. He has also authored several technical and policy reports on topics such as the evaluation of labour market programmes, minimum wages, regional labour markets, and organization (museum) management.

At the university he held several managerial positions. He was programme director (Master in Economics and Master in Human Resources Management) and director of cef.up (2011-2013). He was Dean of the School of Economics between 2015 and 2023.
