BRIEF BIO

Álvaro Aguiar is Professor of Economics at the University of Porto, where he specializes in the fields of Macroeconomics, Economic Growth and Economic Policy. From August 2005 through June 2011, he was Economic Adviser to the Minister of State and Finance of the Portuguese Government, including as Chief of Staff between June 2008 and October 2009 and, since November 2009, as the Chief Economist of the Cabinet. He was also from 2007 until June 2011, the Portuguese member of the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Union and, until January 2012, member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank. From December 2009 to December 2013 he served as a member of the General Council of Fundação Cidade de Guimarães, an institution in charge of the organization of Guimarães 2012, European Capital of Culture. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of CMVM, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission; and, since April 2015, member of the General and Supervisory Council of PBS – Porto Business School, and of its Nomination and Remuneration Committee. He was Pro-Rector of the University of Porto and at the Faculty of Economics, he was also President of the Pedagogical Council, Director of the Doctoral Programme in Economics and Director of the Research Centre for Macroeconomics and Forecasting. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of South Carolina, and an equivalent doctoral degree from the University of Porto.
